Various research lines are running within our department, often in collaboration with various (national or foreign) universities. This international collaboration is good for the quality of the research and for sharing knowledge with other research groups and veterinarians. The focus in our department is mainly on the (sports) physiology of the horse. Through collaboration with human research groups, we further strengthen the "comparative" aspect of our department.

The main lines of research are:
- Exercise physiology in all its aspects, across species. By means of training trials (comparing different types of exercise in different species and breeds) and dietary interventions, combined with the development of reliable standardized exercise tests that allow for objective follow-up of performance capacity, a clear view is obtained on how the body of different animal species and human cope with the challenges of exercise and by extension, this information is of great value for understanding and treating several different metabolic disorders.
At this point 6 Phds have been defended, 2 will defend in april 2024 and several Phds are in the pipeline.
